We're all into foreign films but why not take a couple of minutes out to tell everyone else about yourself; your age, your hobbies, where you're from, anything that interests you at all!

Re: Introduce Yourselves

Ok, I'll start.
I'm 21 and live in Germany. Moved to Berlin three months ago, and for a cinephile, it's like paradise. Besides being interested in film theory, I'm also a bit on learning the hard work. Therefore I've shot a documentary last year, and I intend to make movies for the rest of my life. I'm also heavy into music, being a singer, and trying to form a new band. My "third" love is literature, and I was a typical bookworm until the age of 12. Nowadays I occasionally write poems, and have started my first book this year. And of course I hope to become a good film critic one day. Besides these three loves of mine, I'm also interested in dancing, and from there I've also developed an interest in martial arts, and the movement of the body in general. What I like most though, are people. I love to observe everything, and my understanding of arts and the whole world stems from that. I've been interested in films for 6 years now, and wanted to study film theory, but I wound up in Philosophy. Oh, and originally I'm from Slovenia. |

Re: Introduce Yourselves

Cheers A, by the way, what is the documentary about?
As for me, I've just turned 43, live in Cardiff in Wales which unlike Berlin is not the best place to be for a cinephile. I've been married for a loooooooooooonng time, and have 3 sons and a recent addition, a puppy. I've had a few different jobs over the years, everything from clerical to heavy industry to self employed but I'm still looking for the perfect niche. Obviously I love films but because I like such a broad spectrum I have problems making any sort of best of list, I'll get round to it one day soon. I would dearly love to spend time travelling, preferably around Asia and I'm aiming to do at least a short trip within the next couple of years. Like A, I have a great interest in people, differences in cultures, histories etc. It's fascinating and it's a subject you couldn't get bored of. Other things I enjoy, art and painting, cooking, reading, music (anything from pop to classical). I'm proud of being Welsh but at the moment I'm not proud to be British, I think politicians are egomaniacal and forget they're there to serve the country and although I would classify myself as a socialist, I am thoroughly ashamed of the Labour party and Tony Blair. Anyway, enough of that, the one thing I want to see now is this site up and running and attracting new members (and bringing back the old ones). Cheers Trev. |

Re: Introduce Yourselves

The documentary is about an "institution" where physically and mentally handicapped people live. No big deal, since it isn't finished yet. I need to cut it properly, and it probably won't be finished till the end of the year.

I'm wpqx and I'd like to be a moderator, seriously though, don't know what's going on with the site, tons of changes here. I lost every movie review, list, catalogue, etc I had on my computer, so lots of lamenting has been going on the past week. If I had tear ducts I would cry.

Re: Introduce Yourselves

Hi, I'm nate, 23, male and from the Philippines. I'm a graphic designer and loves to watch movies. I also writes poems and some short stories and in the progress of writing my supposedly second novel. I lost my first 3 chapters that I wrote for my first novel and hadn't tried writing it again (my old computer crash and lost all my old works). So my second novel will be the first if ever get to finish it with my busy schedule at work.
I don't post that much to this forum, most of the movies that I've watched came from the recommendations of other members of this forum. Never get the time to visit any film festivals. I love asian movies and I hope my country could give something out in the world in sense of movies as it did 20 years ago as our independent film makers don't get too much support from our government. I love music, I listen to any music whatsoever just don't expect me to listen to boy/girl pop bands (e.g. spice girls, backstreet boys, etc) and local novelty song. You can take a look at my personal works, poetry here at cry187.deviantart.com/gallery |

This year I graduated Moscow State University, Department of Physics. Be honest - you're surprised that I'm one of those damn physicists that spend tax-payers' money in vain |

Ha ha ha ...
I am still waiting for the photo from A ... ok ok ... I am a Singaporean who has stayed in the United States for quite some time ... But I LOVE Singapore ... apart from family and friends, I miss the FOOD in Singapore ... yummy yummy yummy ... lots of good and cheap food ... I have always told my friends to visit Singapore some day ... and I will host them ... it is NOT the name of the dish that matters, but where to go for what dish ... furthermore, Singapore is very clean ... and because it is small ... we are full of activities ... esp. at night and on weekends ... yup, the night never sets on Singaporeans ... and because it is small, it is easy to get around ... Hmmm ... what do I like to do? well, I like anything that has to do with the ocean ... I can stay an entire day just to look at the ocean ... hee hee ... and because of that I like jet ski, or any other water sports ... but I am not a professional in any of them ... I also like art and design, such as portrait drawing, stained glass, logo design, etc ... Undoubtedly, I like watching movies ... and travelling ... yup, there are so many places I want to visit, Eastern Europe, Western Europe, Russia, China, latin America, etc etc etc ... the list goes on and on ... if only I have the money and the time ... ha ha ha |

Re: Introduce Yourselves

Well since I'm having an identity crisis, I'm still trying to figure out who I am.
In the meantime I'm still 21, for about another 12 days. I've recently decided to go to school full time, simply because this process is taking too damn long. Still researching where to go, but I'm leaning towards the University of Wisonsin-Madison, because that's where David Bordwell and Kristen Thompson teach. I'm not really interested in making movies, unless of course I suddenly become a billionaire. My interest is in film history and the study of film aesthetically. I feel like I know enough to teach, I just need enough credits before a university will agree with me. As for the other interests, well I'm obsessive by nature, and right now I'm obsessed with hacking. Don't worry I'm not the monster who @#%$ up the EZ board database. But I'm learning how to access sites, and it is damn fun. Also joined a death metal band, and listen to literally everything. |

Hi, I'm a girl, and I'm 23, when I started checking out foreignfilms, I was 21. =D
I'm taking up my MA in Creative Writing, and I'm studying Nihinggo too. I'm really a fictionist, but I've tried my hand at poetry and playwriting as well, but what I really love to write are screenplays. They're in Filipino though, with a Wes Anderson kind of humor. =D I've done a bunch of short films in college; haven't gotten around to it lately because my friends are all busy and can't help me out. I teach screenwriting at a college here, and I used to be vegan, now I'm just vegetarian because since I moved out from my parents' house, it's been really hard cooking for myself, but I'm really enjoying it. I can only cook pesto though. I like to travel, and like everyone else here, I'm really interested in people, observing them and learning about their culture and all that. As for music, I got into Dios, The Thrills and The Stills recently. Oh, of course, Belle and Sebastian, and Portishead. And I have long curly hair and I've been mistaken for a Goth for all the black clothes I wear, and my emo-glasses. But in reality I'm a teddy bear. At least, I'd like to think so. |

Re: Introduce Yourselves

As the newest member of this group, let me try and put down a few things as a way of introduction. But, I already feel i know some of you a bit, at least from the kind of films you seem to prefer.
Let me begin at the beginning: I am a woman. I'm 32 and I grew up in Calcutta, India. Have been in India all my life, except a 3-month stint in Germany. I finished a masters in English literature and then moved to Hyderabad to do a Ph.D in cultural studies. What should have been done at least 4 years ago, got delayed because of the job I took up as programme officer with the India Foundation for the Arts, a national grantmaking organisation in the arts, based in Bangalore. Finally, I am in the last stages of my dissertation, which is a social history of popular music in Bengal, looking at the middle class, and questions of modernity and taste. Will be submitting by June this year. Oh yes, i've trained in Indian classical dance for twenty years, though i've given up performing and teaching since the late 90s. Have more of an academic interest in the performing arts now. The best thing about my job is that I work in an area that is closely related to my academic and extra-academic interests. It requires quite a bit of travel to different places in India, monitoring projects and identifying individuals and groups and encouraging them to apply for grants. I've been with this organisation for the last five years. If you are keen to find out more, look up www.indiaifa.org Films have been a passion. My first introduction to cinema was through alternative Indian cinema. My undergraduate years introduced me to world cinema (my college had a very active film club...screenings every saturday for three years), especially the European masters. Since then, I've retained my interest in arthouse cinema, with a parallel interest in popular films (this is of great academic interest to me), primarily bollywood. I often dream of a job in a film archive somewhere! So anybody who knows of upcoming vacancies, do let me know Other passions are literature, cultural theory, the visual and the performing arts (this is beginning to look like a laundry list!!!). I am married to a visual artist, who works professionally as a graphic designer. We run an internet archive of Bengali little magazine literature, on our own steam. Would love to travel outside India, particularly in Eastern Europe, Africa and the Polynesian Islands! I'm horrified at such a long-winded post on myself! M |

Re: Introduce Yourselves

I've got to be fair, there are some really interesting people on the site, it also raises a point that's been playing on my mind, can men and women watch the same film yet come out of it with a different understanding and/or interpretation?
I was thinking of 3-Iron in particular where the thoughts of madhuban and Sara were quite similar, both bringing up the possibility of the majority if not all the film being a dream. That notion hadn't even crossed my mind as I'd just seen it as being unreal and ethereal, basically sown out of the imagination of the director. John, I know you've done your introduction before but is there any chance of an update especially after all your travelling? Cheers Trev. |

Re: Introduce Yourselves
|
Yes that`s true, the mixture on this board is really becoming unique.
I hope we`ll attract some more oddballs Nice to see most people taking the chance to introduce themselves - normally people prefer to be "anonymous" on the internet... @ Trev I think most people get a different understanding of the same film. I`ve had dozens of conversations with people who saw the same film, but in a totally different way (even if we agreed on liking/disliking a film!). And this goes through all ages and sexes. I think it has something to do with great art appealing to many tastes and being open, not offering answers, but posing questions. |

Well madhuban, that explains why you know so damn much about Indian film, you have insider information. Oh well I guess I probably know a @#%$ load more about American movies than you (or anyone on this site but that hasn't been proven yet).

Well..erm...so I obviously missed this thread when I first joined up on heng's prodding.
I'm well sure not as interesting as most of you seem to be. 21, just graduated and studied basics of film theory, media and have done my fair share of short films, which didn't interest me as much as critiquing the ones I've seen. Have been collecting a massive collection of VCDS, DVDs, LDs and VHS tapes since I was young and is my pride and joy. As I was left alone a lot during my formative years, I've grown to look upon television and film as a loving aunt and uncle, both nurturing me into the person I am today. I write in my free time, a lot of reviews and criticisms I've got on my harddrive at the moment that have not been published here and I will get to them as soon as I've fleshed them out. Hoping to further my education some time soon in the fields I have interest in. Currently "working" as a freelance journalist, mainly in film and dabbling in some other areas such as sports as well. Anyway thats me in a nutshell, bland as it sounds I do think life is grand. And am glad to meet like-minded individuals such as yourselves. |
